The 7th edition was introduced in 2019 by the American Psychological Association so that it could replace the 6th edition. APA 7 format looks to incorporate myriad aspects that the 6th edition did not include. The article will be a guideline into APA 7th edition.
APA 7th edition has four main sections. The title page has the title of the paper, the author's name, the institution and department, the author's class, the instructor's name, and the date. The second section has the body that is composed of the introduction, literature review, discussion, and conclusion. The third section has the references which are the sources of the content in the paper. The final section is the appendices which include tables and figures.
The margins have to be 1 inch on the top, bottom, and on both sides. The paragraphs have to be aligned to the left leaving the right edge ragged. The first line of each paragraph has to be indented to the left with a ½ inch from the margin. Page numbers should be included in all pages and should be ½ inch at the top of the page and be flush with the right margin.
One can use a font type as required by their instructor. The major fonts include Times New Roman at 12 point, Calibri at 11 point, Arial at 11 point, Lucinda Sans Unicode at 11 point, and Georgia at 11 point. The whole paper in APA format 7thedition should be double spaced and aligned to the left. The paper should be presented in an active voice and avoid complex words. There should be no periods after the DOI or web address among the references.
There should be numerical labels on the tables and figures. Every table column should have a heading. It should also be separated with lines where necessary. Every table should have a design that makes it understood on its own. All notes about the tables and figures should be below.
It should have the title of the paper, the author's name, the author's class, and the name of the institution. The title should always be less than 12 words. There should be no periods, abbreviations, italics, and underlining. There should be no quotation marks, all letters should either be capital or bold, and the title should be centered horizontally at the upper half part of the page.
Every first line of every paragraph should be aligned to the left and indented at ½ inch. The whole 7th edition APA format paper should be double-spaced. The main parts of the body include the literature review, introductory part, point discussion, and summary conclusion. One should spell out organizational names then include the abbreviations for the rest of the paper. For numbers zero to nine, one should spell out the names and use numerals for numbers more than 10. One should use numerical representation for numbers in tables, times, and dates.
There are five levels of headings in APA manual 7th edition.
Headings in Level one should be at center of the page. They should be bold, and used as main titles.
In level two, the headings are aligned to the left margin, are bold, and used for titles.
For level 3, the headings align to the left margin, are bold, and should be italicized. They should act as titles.
Level 4 headings should be indented at ½ from the margin. They should be bold, presented as a title, and conclude by adding a period. The text should be after the heading.
Level five headings should be indented at ½ inch from the margin and should be bold and italicized. They should also end with a period and be italicized.
Quotations in-text should be short and with quotation marks. Longer quotations should be indented at ½ inch, be double spaced, and have no quotation marks. Quoting more than one paragraph will require indenting all quoted texts at ½ inch from the margin on the left. One should also show omitting a certain section of a quote by employing ellipsis or use a period when the end of a quote is omitted.
The word references should be at the center of the page. The sources should be double spaced with hanging indents. The author's last name should be first then followed by initials of the middle and the first name. (E.g. John, P.J). The reference list should be in alphabetical order. There should be no quotation marks around titles. All the first names, names after colons, and proper nouns should be capitalized.
For secondary sources, one should credit the primary source that the secondary source got its information from. For example, if one reads an article by Jackson et al. (2018) but the article derived its content from Brian (1993) one should credit the primary source while citing the secondary source (Brian 1993, as cited by Jackson et al., 2018).
The outline in APA 7 should use the Times New Roman font. The text size should be 12 point and the whole paper double spaced. All the margins in the paper should be one inch.
Add appendices to ensure the reader can understand the argument made in the paper. Place every appendix on a separate page and indent to the left. Only the first paragraph of the text should not be indented. One appendix should be labeled as "Appendix". More than one should be labeled "Appendix A" or "Appendix B". Tables should be labeled numerically. Each table should have a heading with notes describing the table going below.
Double spaced the bibliography and use a hanging indent. The annotation should be indented to the left at ½ inch from the left margin. The length of the annotation should vary depending on instructions from the professor.
It should be on its page having between 150-250 words. "Abstract" is always centered and the first line should not be indented.
APA 7th edition running head should be 50 characters or less. It is added to the margin at the top with alignment done to the left. The page number should be at the top right side of the page. Each page should have a shortened title and a page number.
